Capella University is seeking Dissertation Mentors in the subject area of Public Administration.  This position will serve within the School of Public Service Leadership "SoPSL." The PA Dissertation Mentor is a part-time faculty position and focuses primarily on serving as a Mentor and Committee Member on learner dissertations. Teaching PA courses and research courses are a possibly on an “as-needed” basis. The primary focus of this position is Mentoring and Committee assignments. 


Capella University seeks out faculty who combine top academic credentials with working or practitioner experience in the fields they teach. Our faculty provide a variety of educational opportunities to our degree and certificate learners. Faculty are responsible for meeting the expectations and requirements of the Capella learner while establishing and maintaining effective relationships. Faculty ensure that learners receive quality educational experiences consistent with stated course outcomes as well as accreditation standards. Capella values the capabilities and talents of its faculty and expects continued learning and development through practice in the discipline or outside scholarly activities.

Primary responsibilities of our faculty include:


  • Providing feedback to dissertation learners on methodology, data collection, data analysis, and the dissertation.
  • Teaching in the online dissertation course, demonstrating knowledge of adult learning theory and practices, to include collaborative learning and active learning strategies.
  • Building an online community conducive to the spirit of learning and continuous improvement in a positive, learner-focused environment.
  • Assessing learning through feedback, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
  • Working with advanced doctoral learners (mentor and committee work).
  • Interface with Public Administration Chair regarding learner issues.
  • Serve as general resource to learners regarding methodology
  • Required trainings as they apply to the part-time faculty position and overall Capella employee requirements.


Other faculty activities may include:

  • Faculty staff meetings
  • Specialized responsibilities or coordinating functions within departments
  • Virtual attendance at faculty meetings, Capella-sponsored faculty development offerings, and other events is required.
  • Infrequent travel to attend commencement and other major events may be requested, but not required.
  • Other duties, as assigned.


Key Differences Between Adjunct and Part-Time Faculty:

Part-time faculty engage in a continuous relationship with Capella, and we are committed to providing work assignments on an ongoing quarterly basis.   Only part-time faculty members may participate in Mentoring or Committee work assignments or any other work assignment that may span four or more quarters.

Adjunct faculty members are not engaged with Capella in a continuous relationship.  They are assigned work as they are available and as Capella has needs. 

All  faculty candidates will be required to complete an unpaid faculty development course as a pre-requisite for employment.  This is an essential part of the selection process for both the faculty member and Capella.


Performance Criteria:

Part-time/adjunct faculty will be assessed based upon their demonstration of personal drive to accomplish goals and consistently meet expectations. Performance criteria may include the following (depending upon the type of activities assigned):

Evidence of high quality learner interactions as demonstrated through:
* End of course evaluations


Appropriately meets qualitative standards:

  • Quality of teaching
  • Contributions to the school or university
  • Responsiveness to feedback




Education (Required):
  • Ph.D., DPA, or equivalent degree in a public service related field, such as Public Administration, Public Policy, or similar field is required.
  • Degree required to be from a regionally accredited institution.


Experience (Required):
  • Two years of professional experience in a field within Public Administration.
  • Two years of higher education research teaching experience in a field within Public Administration.
  • Two years of higher education research mentoring experience, to include mentoring learners and serving on master's or dissertation committees.
  • Experiences that provide an understanding of the specific needs of the adult, non-traditional learner.
  • Demonstrated expertise in research methodology and design (basic research, program evaluation or action research).
  • Demonstrated contribution to the discipline such as publishing, committee involvement, or professional association involvement.


Experience (Preferred):
  • Experience reviewing Institutional Review Board proposals is preferred.
  • Experience teaching at research residency programs.


Other Skills (Required):
  • Strong knowledge of APA writing requirements, proper grammar, and editing skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to translate complex concepts succinctly.
  • Effectively working collaboratively across different teams.
  • Strong organization skills: detail focused, meets deadlines, and has exceptional follow up skills.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and able to have critical conversations as needed with colleagues and learners

Many of our positions, including this role, are designed to be remote "home office" settings. 

Employees working out of a home office are responsible for providing an appropriate and safe office space, office furniture and organization, communication tools, and related items. These include: 

  • arranging for high speed internet connection, printer and a dedicated phone line for business use. Specifics regarding expense coverage and reimbursement vary based on individual position categories. Capella will not provide office equipment or on-site set up assistance.  
  • the environment must be free from distractions and enable a highly productive and professional work environment.  
  • as with on-site positions, our off-site positions require that the majority of the time will be spent using a telephone, PC and monitors. 
  • any and all daycare arrangements must be made so that employees are not working while providing care for children or other family members at home. 
  • there are minimal lifting requirements unless otherwise noted.
