What is Federal Work Study?
The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) provides part-time employment to learners with financial need. Financial need is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) provided by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The award amount depends on your financial need and is based on expected weekly employment targets.  Unlike federal grants, funds from the Federal Work Study are paid to the learner on a bi-weekly basis after employment requirements have been met and wages have been earned.  The inclusion of Federal Work Study in your financial aid award is not a guarantee of the amount you will earn as you will be paid only for the hours that you actually work.


All federal aid sources must be included in your financial aid, including the Federal Work Study Program. With this additional federal aid source, it may reduce the amount of federal loans you would be eligible for. Keep in mind that federal loans must be paid back (with interest) whereas the Federal Work Study Program funds are provided to you bi-weekly and do not require repayment.


Position Summary
The Quantitative Skills Coach is responsible for planning and facilitating interactive, collaborative (academic and quantitative) skills labs for learners that encourage essential quantitative competency building; offering one-on-one or group tutoring and consultation; and developing quantitative skills resources to help Capella learners become independent and successful learners of quantitative subject matter and topics.


Quantitative Skills Coach duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Aiding learners in quantitative skill topics (varies based on coach’s area of study and expertise)
  • Designing and delivering quantitative skills labs in Adobe Connect
  • Providing one-on-one quantitative skills tutoring and consultation with learners
  • Developing self-paced quantitative skills resources, tools, tutorials, and handouts for learners


This position requires 10-15 hours a week and is remote (home office setting).  Most duties can be completed on nights and weekends, but some availability during regular business hours for training and weekly team meetings may also be required.



To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Have completed the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
  • Have successfully completed a minimum of 3 quarters at Capella University with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their program of study. Be prepared to submit your unofficial transcript when requested.
  • Be continuously enrolled as a learner during their appointment as Quantitative Skills Coach.
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Agree to a commitment through June 30, 2019.
  • Be in enrolled in a graduate program at Capella. Preference given to those who have successfully completed quantitative courses within their programs (e.g., statistics, quantitative methods) with a grade of A. Undergraduate who have successfully complete
  • college algebra, discrete math, and other quantitative courses will also be considered.
  • Submit an assignment that demonstrates your competency in a quantitatative skills area (i.e., statistics, biostatistics, quanitativite research, accounting, college algebra).
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a Capella instructor in PSY 7864, PSY 8625, or PSY 8626



  • Develops high-quality and interactive quantitative skills lab sessions in Adobe Connect
  • Provides one-on-one support or consultation through coaching or tutoring
  • Develops quantitative focused learning resources, tools, and handouts to assist learners in their quantitative competency building
  • Completes administrative duties required of role in a timely manner
  • Provides assistance in the use and application of academic resources
  • Provides support and encouragement to selected learners.
  • Maintains learner confidentiality, FERPA
  • Collaboration under the direction of supervisor
  • Professional behavior with faculty
  • Attends all scheduled meetings.
  • Models successful academic practices
  • Completes initial and ongoing training as needed
  • Participate in outreach to learners to increase participation


Program-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Conducts weekly synchronous learning lab sessions for learners.
  • Maintains weekly Open Office sessions.
  • Assists learners with the building, editing, and submission of objects as relative to course assignments.


Essential Skills:

  • Advanced statistics and research method knowledge and experience is essential
  • Proficiency in commonly used software and applications for quantitative analysis (i.e, SPSS, Microsoft Excel, etc.), and proficiency Mac and PC operations systems strongly preferred
  • Time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities are critical
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with faculty, coaches, learners, and other QSC contributors
  • Insight on necessary study skills and habits of successful students
  • Self-starter, with demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete competing priorities in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor at all times
  • Ability to plan and develop creative study strategies using a wide variety of identified learning strategies and experience with diverse learning styles
  • Excellent relationship-building, customer service, problem and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to explain concepts in different ways
  • Assess individual and group learning needs
  • Comfortable using technology to facilitate learning
  • Experience with Adobe Connect is helpful
  • Demonstrated expertise in chosen content area
  • Interest or experience with teaching or tutoring

  • Minimum hardware, internet, and phone requirements (equal to learners’ computer compatibilities)


Job Location


Many of our positions, including this role, are designed to be remote "home office" settings.


Employees working out of a home office are responsible for providing an appropriate and safe office space, office furniture and organization, communication tools, and related items. These include:

  • arranging for high speed internet connection, printer and a dedicated phone line for business use. Specifics regarding expense coverage and reimbursement vary based on individual position categories. Capella will not provide office equipment or on-site set up assistance.  
  • the environment must be free from distractions and enable a highly productive and professional work environment.  
  • as with on-site positions, our off-site positions require that the majority of the time will be spent using a telephone, PC and monitors. 
  • any and all daycare arrangements must be made so that employees are not working while providing care for children or other family members at home. 
  • there are minimal lifting requirements unless otherwise noted.
