To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Have completed the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
  • Have successfully completed a minimum of 3 quarters at Capella University with at least a 3.0 GPA. 
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Be continuously enrolled as a learner during their appointment as work study Health Sciences teaching assistant.
  • Currently enrolled in the Doctor of Health Administration or Doctor of Public Health Program at Capella
  • Agree to a commitment through June 2019


  • Clarifies and reinforces course room procedure and expectations
  • Provides instructional guidance and explanation
  • “Spot” coaching and tutoring of selected learners
  • Provides assistance in the use and application of academic resources
  • Provides support and encouragement to selected learners.
  • Maintains learner confidentiality, FERPA
  • Collaboration under the direction of mentor/faculty
  • Professional behavior with faculty mentor
  • Visits course discussions and maintains familiarity with course material
  • Attends all scheduled meetings.
  • Models successful academic practices
  • Completes initial and ongoing training as needed

Program Specific Responsibilities:

  • Conducts weekly synchronous learning lab sessions for learners.
  • Maintains weekly Open Office sessions.
  • Assists learners with Second Life:
  • Helps learners locate and join the course parcel and important areas within it.
  • Assists learners with the building, editing, and submission of objects as relative to course assignments.

  • Insight on necessary study skills and habits of successful students
  • Ability to explain concepts in different ways
  • Demonstrated expertise in chosen content area

  • Comfortable using technology to facilitate learning
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Assess individual and group learning needs
  • Written communication skills
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution

Hardware/Software Requirements

  • Minimum hardware, internet, and phone requirements (equal to learners’ computer compatibilities)

Many of our positions, including this role, are designed to be remote "home office" settings.


Employees working out of a home office are responsible for providing an appropriate and safe office space, office furniture and organization, communication tools, and related items. These include:

  • Arranging for high speed internet connection, printer and a dedicated phone line for business use. Specifics regarding expense coverage and reimbursement vary based on individual position categories. Capella will not provide office equipment or on-site set up assistance.  
  • The environment must be free from distractions and enable a highly productive and professional work environment.  
  • As with on-site positions, our off-site positions require that the majority of the time will be spent using a telephone, PC and monitors. 
  • Any and all daycare arrangements must be made so that employees are not working while providing care for children or other family members at home. 
  • There are minimal lifting requirements unless otherwise noted.
